Valerio Alfieri
BA IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES, MA IN NEUROBIOLOGY(2020)
Since high school I have developed a keen interest in the scientific pursuit of subjects such as mind, brain, behavior and psychiatric diseases. After studying biology as a bachelor’s degree, which gave me a new passion for living organisms in their basic cellular components, I graduated in neurobiology as master’s degree and spent one year working in a behavioral neuroscience lab researching the neural circuits of social fear. However, the discovery of computational neuroscience and AI enabled me to acquire the quantitative skills required to develop theoretical models of the brain that offer invaluable support in order to understand and simulate the functional mechanisms underlying complex behaviors. I am currently implementing a computational model based on biologically plausible neurons to simulate the brain circuits underlying social fear and their plasticity.

MA IN PHILOSOPHY OF MIND (2010) MA IN COGNITIVE SCIENCE OF COMMUNICATION AND ACTION
With a constant desire to learn new things (“never stop learning” is my mantra) I’m actually doing an internship at E-CO E-Learning Studio on a project in collaboration with the Advanced School in Artificial Intelligence (AS-AI). My main focuses are Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning and Data Science. Meanwhile I'm also very close to get my third Master of Arts degree in "Cognitive Science of communication and action" at the University of Rome III. Previously I got a Master of Arts in Philosophy of Mind at Warwick University (UK) and a Master of Arts in Philosophy at University of Roma III. During my early studies I focused about philosophy of science (space-time and quantum mechanics), cognitive psychology and Theory of Mind; thereafter I start focusing in cognitive science, neuroscience, and actually in Natural Language Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, as I mentioned above.Thanks to the school I’m collaborating with E-CO E-Learning studio to develop a text and audio classifier. When I started my studies in philosophy, I always had an interest in what concerned artificial intelligence. Ended the course I started to explore the world of cognitive sciences, where I deepened the studies of computational psychiatry, which led me to the discovery of AS-AI. Thanks to the Advanced School I was able to discover the world of Machine Learning and computational models. Moreover, I had the opportunity to take part in many projects, one of which will be my experimental degree thesis, with which I will conclude my Master's Course. Massimiliano Bruni
MA IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (2020)
I am very passionate about technology, especially Computer Science. Recently, I am interested in Machine Learning applied to Computer Vision. I have a Bachelor and a Master's Degree in Computer Science and Engineering, specialized in AI and ML. I have done my Bachelor thesis at CNR about deep learning applied to computer vision. My goals are to work in a big and dynamic company, which allows me to continuously grow, learn and have fun. My project is a pipeline of two deep neural networks: one to detect people silhouettes (instance segmentation) and one to understand who are those people (person identification). It is a real world project, which can be applied to video surveillance systems and I developed it for Inglobe Technologies Srl. BA IN PSYCHOLOGY, MA IN COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE (2019)
Thanks to Oliver Sacks' books I first learned about the human brain's potentialities. I devoted my academic life to the fascinating discipline of Neuroscience. I had the terrific opportunity to collaborate with the Social and Cognitive Neuroscience laboratory in Fondazione Santa Lucia (Rome). I had the chance to work with both clinical populations (Parkinson’s Disease) and healthy people. I became familiar with TMS, EEG and movement kinematics techniques. I am amazed by the extraordinary, bizarre potentialities of the human brain. I am eager to see what we will achieve in the future by linking them to AI. Thanks to AS-AI and with my team colleagues, I intend to classificate EEG brain signals for the future development of a Brain Computer Interface. MA IN CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY, PHD IN DYNAMIC AND CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
After my PhD in Clinical Psychology I started to research for several years on personality disorders and mental disorders, and more generally on their causes. The AI field has always fascinated me, especially for its potential in the theoretical field (understanding the underlying causes of diseases) and practical (the implementation of devices that make it easier to identify people's discomfort and reach them to help them). AS-AI helped me put these two "souls" together. This led to the Psycare project, and the use of AI for language analysis (NLP) to implement a support device for clinicians in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients. BA IN BIOTECHNOLOGY (2020)
I've always been fascinated by the world we live in, as much as the world inside us and everything we, humans, build up around. I decided to enroll in Biotechnology to understand more of what is life, how does it work and what is, in practice, possible to do with that. The topics I've developed a special interest for are molecular and structural biology, neuroscience and methabolism. From neuroscience I've then discovered AI, machine learning and started studying basic informatics. AS-AI introduced me to the real research work and motivated my interest in AI. I'm planning to further explore both bio and computer science; my aim is pluridisciplinary research in various health, medical and tech-development fields. MA IN COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE
Studying psychology and neuroscience lighted in me the passion for science. In 2019 I started to work in a behavioral neurophisiology lab, focusing on data analysis and experimental methodology. The AS-AI taught me how to implement machine learning tools for data analysis, which I retain most important for my career. I'm currently aiming to deepen my knowledge about machine learning and other data analysis tools. BACKEND DEVELOPER
I graduated in Computer Science at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, in 2019. The topic of my degree thesis at CNR (IAC) was about parallel graph algorithms. I worked for several years as backend developer. This experience allowed me to develop a solid background in coding and software engineering. My personal goal is to always increase my skills and stay updated on new technologies. This attitude led me to AS-AI where I studied the fundamentals of machine learning. In particular, I have discovered a strong interest in deep neural networks. They are a very powerful tool to solve problems that were considerd usolvable in the past. In the future I would like to combine deep learning techniques with my know-how in software engineering and parallel computing. I have collaborated to the dAIsy project. MA IN GENETICS AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY (2019)
I've been passionate about science and technology since very young age. During my MSc in Genetics and Molecular Biology I was amazed by regulatory pathways and how the system is finely tuned at many levels, also thanks to the interplay between non-coding RNAs. These intricate regulatory networks are relevant in physiological conditions for the homeostasis of the cell, differentiation or, if deregulated, in pathogenesis. It caught my interest the possibility to investigate these networks with Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning, to find relevant features that may be involved in pathogenesis or development. My project in AS-AI consists in making use of ML and Network analysis to investigate a proteomic dataset of cancer patients, in order to find new cancer biomarkers, find novel druggable targets and predict therapy response. After graduating I was sure of only one thing "wanting to do research". I had the opportunity to get to know the best research group of the ISTC-CNR that works with artificial intelligence. Here I discovered this new line of research and it fascinated me. I am a cognitive neuroscientist, investigating the link between neural circuits and behavior is my passion. Recently admitted to an executive PhD in Computer Science at University of Milan Bicocca, I currently collaborate as Business Strategist & AI Research Fellow in an AI startup and as Research Advisor & Consultant for a well-known media intelligence and communication private consultant in Milan. My final goal is to merge academic research and education activities (and maybe a startup) within the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Science and Complex Systems. In general, I am keen on working on inter-disciplinary cutting-edge projects allowing me both to create and manage innovation. In AS-AI I am working on a project in Computational Social Science with the Laboratory of Agent-Based Social Simulation of ISTC. The project is aimed at studying the way in which European citizens perceive democracy, by means of both a statistical study of the democracy perception in the European society and a social simulation of the emergent opinion behaviors through agent-based modelling methods. Since I was a child, I have always loved maths, in particular for the accuracy with which it defines concepts in order to use them to prove new things. I have never seen a line of code before choosing the Computer Science degree, when I realized that I wanted to solve real problems using maths in a practical way. During the university years, I was really "hungry" (citing Steve Jobs) to learn all about the computer science fields. Some of the courses that fascinated me most were Algorithms, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence. Now, I am a Research Fellow at "Sapienza" University, Department of Statistical Sciences, working on Big Data analysis in Bioinformatics. My interest in Artificial Intelligence, in particular Machine Learning, led me to increase my knownledge, following the courses at the Advanced School in AI. I've got a Msc in Physics in 2000 and a PhD in Geophysics in 2004. Actually I’m a scientist of INGV. I work with many different research groups on many different topics as my skills are basically as data analyst and scientific software developer. Basically I try to help scientists to find the mathematical pathway to solve get a specific goal and develop user-friendly software to perform such analysis in many different scenarios. I can code in C++, Matlab, R and (during the school) I have learnt also Python. My school project is focused on use of A.I. to estimate earth magnetic field sources. I am a PhD Student in Neuroscience at the University of Genoa. My PhD focuses on acquisition and analysis of different motor performances in patients with Parkinson’s Disease. This analysis has the aim to detect biomarkers that could allow clinicians to track disease progression in order to define physical and pharmacological treatment that helps to postpone patients motor degeneration. During the first year of my PhD, I suddenly realized the limits of studying the disease effects on gesture alteration without understanding the neurophysiological causes that generated those changes. For this reason I’m getting passionate aboout AI, more precisely Computational Models, I believe that those techniques will play a fundamental role in closing the loop in motion analysis. With my PhD supervisor Elisa Pelosin and my professor Daniele Caligiore I am developing a computational model that aims to give insight about motor learning in three different populations: young, elderly and PD patients.

Nowadays, artificial intelligence and its broad applications hold great potential, far and beyond the research field and, as a neuroscience graduate, I recently got fascinated by its promising interaction with my field of study. The constant passion for learning, and precisely the goal to develop programming skills in an interdisciplinary team, introduced me to the AS-AI postgraduate school. I am particularly passionate about neuroprediction and its potential use in forensic psychiatry and forensic neuroscience for various applications, such as enhancing the predictive accuracy of risk assessment tools and discover new useful biomarkers to improve early diagnosis. My long term goal is to use artificial intelligence techniques to build robust and efficient models able to enhance our real understanding of complex processes occurring in the human brain. I am also very passionate about AI ethics and explainable AI. My AS-AI projects focus on the use of deep learning techniques to analyse a vast dataset of neuroimaging data, and also to use Natural language processing techniques to analyse speech and text data to identify features able to help us identifying and predicting psychiatric diseases. My educational path has been always driven by a strong interest in autistic spectrum disorder. After my bachelor's degree in Psychology, I earned the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Certificate. Currently, I'm attending the Master Programme in Cognitive Neuroscience, because I deeply desire to combine my previous knowledge with new research tecnologies. My research project simulates some typical behaviors of autism using a computational model. The model on the cerebellum is developed starting from behavioral data of abnormal conditioned response timing in eyeblink conditioning.
